The importance of hobbies is distinguished from professions, entertainment, or amusement. The creative element of a passion for invention is a hobby.

Everybody does not have a hobby. It is a thing pursued for its own sake in all stages of life during one's leisure.It is a rewarding means of self-expression and helps make life fuller and richer.

   

A hobby is something that one does or a subject that one studies as an occupation for one leisure.Hence, it is a favorite engagement. There are different kinds of hobbies: painting, fishing, photography, carpentry, gardening, collecting stamps, collecting rare flowers, reading old books, etc. Some are costly, such as hunting, fishing, etc. While some are within reach of all, one can engage oneself in a hobby all through life and thereby keep young in spirit and healthy even in old age.

What is a hobby for one may be a profession for another. A student who has photography as his hobby cannot be happy unless he goes on an excursion and takes photographs of rare pieces of scenery. The idea of making money does not figure at all in the picture. But the studio proprietor practices photography as a profession inasmuch as he makes a living by it. True, hobbies like collecting stamps, making fancy articles, rabbit rearing, and beekeeping may turn out to be paying propositions, but that is accidental.

A hobby is to be distinguished from a recreation, which both refreshes the mind and the body. Among recreations, mention may be made of participation in games and sports, swimming, and boating. But there is a radical difference in the intellectual approach: men have to seek leisure to indulge in a recreation for relief from fatigue,while leisure induces them to pursue a hobby, which makes them feel refreshed and better fit for work. This is because they feel a sense of gratification from an inner urge. If recreation replenishes depleted energy, hobbies renew life and vigor, and that makes all the difference. Relief is the aim of recreation, while it is accidental in the pursuit of a hobby.

Entertainment (or amusement) can never be called a hobby, though both make one cheerful and happy by keeping the mind engaged in a pleasant way. Entertainments include going to a theater,cinema, circus, and concerts. But there is a fundamental difference in the emotional approach. For pleasure, amusement is indulged in, while out of pleasure, a hobby is pursued, and that makes all the difference. A hobby, therefore, gives a high sense of gratification that recreation or entertainment can ill afford.

Some of the discoveries and inventions are traceable to hobbies. Hobby, in whose pursuit one is engrossed,forms the fulfillment of a passion for inventing things that are surely more beneficial to the world, the pursuits that seem to profit man because of their direct involvement.

A hobby thus affords him the reward of self-expression. In the early stages of a student's life, nothing reveals his personality as much as his hobby. This furnishes a clue to the parent and the teacher for determining his career, wherein his natural bent of mind finds complete expression.

Thus, a hobby, innocent in character, pursued out of pleasure, induced by leisure, and indulged in because of an inner urge for self-expression affords intellectual and emotional gratification, revitalization of the faculties of body and mind, and contributes to the full development of one's personality, which is the summum (be all and end all) of liberal education, the goal of a university.
